De origen yemení, y viviendo desde hace más de quince años en algún lugar del sudeste asiático, Gassan Aqel se define como ¨artista visual y músico a tiempo completo¨, curtido en el mundo creativo digital tras su paso por la industria de los videojuegos, hace años que se dedica por entero a la creación, siempre digital, y ahora se abre camino en el mercado del criptoarte. (1) ¿Quién eres?
Me llamo Gassan Aqel. Soy artista visual y músico a tiempo completo. Empecé mi andadura en el mundo del arte hace 12 años. Trabajé en la industria de los videojuegos, luego en producción pero finalmente me cansé por la falta de mi control creativo. En 2016 decidí convertirme en artista a tiempo completo y dejar atrás la vida laboral estándar. Desde entonces he creado muchas obras de arte y he explorado diferentes medios artísticos, pero mi enfoque sigue siendo el medio digital. En 2020, empecé a oír hablar de las NFT, lo que despertó mucho mi interés. Vi su potencial. El arte digital se ha mantenido al margen del mundo del arte. Carecía del respeto de las galerías de arte tradicionales y nadie estaba dispuesto a pagar dinero por él. Las NFT cambiaron todo eso. Nos dieron voz y un valor real a nuestro oficio. Tras estudiar e investigar sobre las NFT en 2020, decidí dar el paso y unirme al espacio en enero de 2021. Ha sido un viaje loco lleno de altibajos. Pero, al fin y al cabo, es la única manera de que los artistas digitales hagamos carrera con lo que hacemos y seamos apreciados de la misma manera que se aprecia a los artistas tradicionales.
(1) ¿Cómo trabajas?
Así que mi trabajo es una mezcla de técnicas de pintura digital mezcladas con algunos métodos de arte digital. Empecé a desarrollar mi propio estilo alrededor de 2017. Quería tener un aspecto único, extraño y alienígena, como las redes de nuestra psicología. Quería que el público mirara mi obra y sintiera que ve dentro de los pensamientos de alguien.Normalmente utilizo photoshop para pintar. Luego utilizo mi propia técnica de capas para crear estos colores nítidos. Casi utilizo la técnica como si fuera pintura real, porque la mayoría de las veces tengo muchos colores ocultos detrás de la capa principal. Si ves un rojo puro o un azul puro en mis obras y te preguntas por qué el color parece diferente, normalmente es porque hay un color amarillo detrás que le da ese aspecto extraño y vibrante. También uso After Effects y Premiere Pro para cualquier animación y composición.

(3) Proyectos actuales
Acabo de terminar la colección Ouroboros que saldrá el 18 de enero en NiftyGateway con dos días a la venta en el mercado primario (Estad atentos).En la colección Ouroboros, exploré el concepto de la madre naturaleza reclamándose a sí misma. Podrás leer más sobre ella cuando salga.
Actualmente estoy trabajando en una colección sin título. Creo que va a ser diferente de todo lo que he hecho hasta ahora. Estoy creando arte en forma de puzles y mensajes ocultos. Depende del público cómo lo va a descifrar. Nunca revelaré la respuesta. Depende de la gente.

(4) En lo que va de tu carrera, ¿cuál es el momento artístico del que se siente más orgulloso?
El momento de mayor orgullo de mi carrera artística es el día en que decidí dedicarme a ello a tiempo completo. Es lo más aterrador y lo más satisfactorio que he hecho hasta ahora en mi vida. Para ser sincera, es lo único que sé hacer bien. Lo he intentado todo y he acabado fracasando u odiándolo. El arte es lo que estoy destinado a hacer y seguiré haciéndolo hasta mi último aliento.
(5) ¿Cómo ves el mercado digital del arte en un futuro próximo?
Las cosas cambian muy deprisa en el espacio NFT. Es bastante difícil de predecir, pero ahí es nada.
Creo que las NFT seguirán haciéndose más grandes y complejas con el tiempo. Creo que las grandes empresas van a desempeñar un papel importante en el futuro. No estoy seguro de si eso es bueno o malo, está por ver.
Los mercados se están desplazando lentamente hacia la curación y la publicación, por lo que creo que va a ser una parte importante de la escena futura. Básicamente vamos por el mismo camino que el arte tradicional, con representantes de los artistas en las galerías. Es interesante ver cómo evoluciona todo.Además, una vez que la tecnología alcance su punto álgido en cuanto a realidad mixta, creo que será la edad de oro de las NFT. Lo que tenemos ahora y lo que llamamos metaverso está aún en fase de prototipo.
Así que el futuro no da miedo ni es bueno. Va a ser algo totalmente diferente.

English interview with Gassan Aqel
(1) Brief Bio
My name is Gassan Aqel. I’m a full time visual artist and a musician. I started my journey in the art world 12 years ago. I worked in the video game industry, then in production but eventually got tired because of the lack of my creative control. I decided in 2016 to become a full time artist and to leave the standard work life behind. Since then I created many artworks and explored different art mediums but my focus remains on the digital medium. In 2020, I started hearing about NFTs which piqued my interest greatly. I saw the potential of it. Digital art has been taking the small sidelines of the art world. It lacked the respect of the traditional art galleries and nobody was willing to pay money for it. NFTs changed all of that. It gave us a voice, and gave us true value for our craft. After studying and researching NFTs in 2020, I decided to make a move and join the space in January 2021. It has been a crazy journey filled with ups and downs. But at the end of the day, it’s the only way for those of us who are digital artists to make a career out of what we do and be appreciated the same way traditional artists are appreciated.
(2) How do you work? What is your practice? Which tools do you use?
So, my work is a mixture of digital painting techniques mixed with some digital art methods. I started developing my own style around 2017. I wanted to have a unique look, and I wanted it to look strange and alien, like the webs of our psychology. I wanted the audience to look at my work and feel that they see inside somebody’s thoughts.
Usually I use photoshop to paint. Then I use my own developed technique of layering to create these crisp colors. I almost use the technique like actual paint because most of the time I actually have many hidden colors behind the main layer. If you see pure red or pure blue in my artworks and you’re wondering why the color looks different, it’s usually because there is a yellow color behind it and that gives it that strange and vibrant look. I also use after effects and premiere pro for any animation and compositing.(3) Current projects (including the DROP Ouroboros)
I just finished The Ouroboros collection which is dropping on the 18th of jan on NiftyGateway and it’s staying for 2 days. (Keep your eyes peeled).
In the Ouroboros collection, I explored the concept of mother nature reclaiming itself. You can read more about it when it drops.Currently I’m working on an untitled collection. I believe it’s going to be different from everything I’ve made so far. I’m creating art in the form of puzzles and hidden messages. It’s up to the audience how they’re gonna decode it. I will never reveal the answer. It’s up to the people.
(4) So far in your practice, which is the artistic moment you feel prouder of?
The proudest moment of my art career is the day that I decided to do it full time. It’s the scariest and the most fulfilling thing I’ve done so far in my life. To be frank it’s the only thing I know how to do well. I’ve tried everything and ended up failing or hating it. Art is what I’m meant to do and I will keep doing this till my last breath. (5) How do you see the digital Art Market in the near future?
Things shift too quickly in the NFT space. It’s pretty hard to predict but here goes nothing.
I think NFTs will continue to grow bigger and more complex with time. I believe big corporations are going to play a big role in it in the future. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, it remains to be seen.
The market places are shifting slowly towards curation and publishing so I think that’s going to be a huge part of the future scene. We basically are heading the same route as traditional art by having representatives for the artists to galleries. It’s definitely interesting to see how it’s all shaping.
Also once technology reaches its peak in terms of mixed reality, I believe that would be the golden age of NFTs. Whatever we have now and what we call the metaverse is still in its prototype phase.So the future is not scary or good. It’s going to be something entirely different.
