P. ¿Quién es ?

Soy Michael, un artista visual, experto en animación viviendo y trabajando en Edimburgo, Escocia. Soy alemán, de Hamburgo. Mi carrera artística principal ha sido la animación, he trabajado como animador de “stop motion” durante quince años en varios proyectos, pequeños y grandes, desde vídeos musicales, películas de bajo presupuesto hasta películas de grandes recursos como ‘ Fantastic Mr. Fox’ o ‘Frankenweenie’

 

 

Siempre me ha movido lo visual. Incluso haciendo animación en obras narrativas, siempre pongo énfasis en pulir lo visual, a menudo con estilo monocromático y minimalista.  Hay dos objetivos que quiero conseguir con mi arte, primero, hacer uso de un lenguaje visual reconocible,  y que permita interpretaciones personales, y segundo, dotar a mis piezas de complejidad, ocultas detrás de la aparente sencillez visual, que sólo se revela al observar la pieza muchas veces.

Al principio, en mis propios proyectos usaba mi experiencia con “stop motion” pero con el tiempo mis obras han evolucionado hacia la abstracción, el minimalismo y lo experimental. A principio de 2020  el descubrimiento de los NFTS fue liberador para mí.

P. ¿Cómo empieza tu relación con el criptoarte?

Inspiración

Es difícil para mí señalar influencias o inspiraciones concretas, aparte de mi carrera en el mundo de la animación. Pero  sin duda hay una educación informal visitando galerías de arte, y exposiciones de todo tipo de estilos y géneros. Siempre me ha gustado el arte abstracto y el arte minimalista, no importa si es en animación o en representaciones más clásicas, y también me siento atraído por la fotografía en blanco y negro, y el uso del monocromatismo. Todas estas influencias alimentan mi experimentación

Gracias a los NFTs veo más arte que nunca. Intento aglutinar todos esos impactos y llevarlos a mi terreno de blancos y negros. Me siento muy inspirado por todos aquellos artistas que usan la programación y algoritmos para expresarse de manera creativa. Antes de comenzar con los NFTs no tenía ni idea de estas nuevas corrientes creativas, en los últimos 8 meses he visto obras sorprendentes, bellas, y conmovedores de parte de muchos nuevos artistas.

P. ¿Cómo trabajas?

Desde la primera obra que convertí en NFT, en mayo de 2021 en  hicetnunc, mi punto de partida para cada obra ha sido un cuadrado en negro, incluso las piexas que parpadean del blanco al negro comienzan con un cuadrado negro. El cuadrado blanco siempre parece venir después. Sólo he hecho algunas piezas circulares, y también empiezan con un cuadrado negro, la forma circular está cortada desde un cuadrado negro. Para mí, el cuadrado negro, el píxel negro, es lo más minimalista, el origen. Una gran parte de mi arte es la exploración. Me gusta jugar con la pantalla -eso viene de mis tiempos con stop motion-. Me acerco a cada pieza con una idea o noción de lo que me gustaría que fuera pero abrazando la idea de que la pieza puede desarrollar su propio camino.

Usar el cuadrado negro como forma clásica abre la puerta a esa exploración: las limitaciones visuales ponen el foco en el movimiento, el espacio, el tamaño y el ritmo. Actualmente para mis piezas digitales uso principalmente After Fx, estoy pensando en moverme hacia una fusión analógica-digital usando stop motion

 

P. ¿Proyectos actuales?

Mi nueva colección se llama NTRVL  es una serie de 5 animaciones ,”loops”, que exploran visualizaciones abstractas de formas, ritmos y sonidos. Todas las piezas son geométricas, en blanco y negro. Podéis verlas aquí

P. ¿Quién es ?

 

Hi. I am Michael. I am an animator/visual artist working and living with my family in Edinburgh,  Scotland. I am originally from Hamburg, in Germany. My artistic background is foremost animation. Professionally, I have been working as a stop motion  animator for almost 15 years, working on various projects small and large, from no budget short  films and music videos to big budget feature films like ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ and ‘Frankenweenie’. 

Initially, my own short films embraced my stop motion background but over the last few years my  personal endeavours have become increasingly minimal, abstract and experimental. The discovery  of NFTs as a way to explore more short form minimal and abstract animation in the beginning of  2020 has been a liberating moment for myself. Apart from animation I use screen printing as another tool to explore minimalism and the abstract.

 

I have always been driven by visuals. Even when doing animated narrative pieces, a huge emphasis  was on doing striking and arresting visuals, often minimal and stylised and monochromatic. 

There are really two things I would like to achieve with my art. Firstly, to use a visual language that  people can relate to and allows for personal interpretation, and secondly, for the complexity of a  piece to hide behind arresting minimal visuals that only reveal everything that is going on after  multiple viewings

 

P. ¿Cómo empieza tu relación con el criptoarte?

Inspiration 

Admittedly, it is difficult to pinpoint specific influence or inspiration. My early creative influence is foremost animation. But without doubt there has been an  informal eduction by visiting galleries and exhibitions of all kinds of styles and genres. I always loved abstract and minimal art whether that is animation or traditional art and I  always liked monochromatic and black and white photography. All of these influences  definitely feed into my current explorations. 

Thanks to NFTs I am looking at more art than ever. I am trying to absorb as much of it as  possible whilst admittedly leaning towards the black and white.I am hugely inspired by all the people who use coding or processing to express  themselves creatively. Before I started my NFT journey I had absolutely no idea what was  happening. I have seen some absolutely stunning, beautiful and moving art in the past 8  months that I wouldn’t want to single out one or two artists. 

P. ¿Cómo trabajas?

Since my very first NFT which I minted and released on hicetnunc in late May 2021 the starting  point for each and every piece has been a black square. Even the pieces that flip between black and  white start with a black square. The white one always seem to come second. I have only done very 

few circular pieces up until now and they also start with a black square. The circular shape is cut  out of a black square. 

For me, a black square or black pixel is the most minimal starting point. 

A big part of my art is exploration. I always like to play on screen – or when I used to create stop  motion work directly in front of the camera – and experiment and explore. I approach every piece  with a rough idea/sketch of what I would like it to be but am embracing the fact that the piece can  develop a life on it’s own. 

Using such a classic shape like a square lends itself to this exploration. It’s visual limitations shift  the focus on movement, spacing, size and pace. 

Whilst I currently create my digital pieces foremost in After Fx, I am planning a shift towards the  analogue to combine both digital and stop motion animation.

 

P. ¿Proyectos actuales?

New collection NTRVL is now live. 

NTRVL is a series of five animated loops exploring minimal abstract visualisations of patterns,  rhythm and sound. All five pieces are geometric, black and white, and silent.
