The 20 artists with the best results in auction in 2018, according to Artprice

We continue with a detailed analysis of the Artprice report of 2018, and we would like to refer today to the complete and exquisite list that concludes it: the list of the 500 best rated artists in auction in the past year. However, it does not make sense to reproduce it here without greater ambition, so we are going to take the 20 names that point to us and to speak briefly of each of them, in an informative way.

 

1. Pablo Picasso.

 

And we have already talked about the importance of being called Picasso. The Spanish artist, born in 1881 and died in 1973, has sold a total of 3,391 lots this year, for 744,426,285 dollars. The highest batch has lowered hammer in 115,000,000 dollars: Fillette the corbeille fleurie, of 1905, the 8 of May, in Christie’s New York (auction Rockefeller). Ranked 2 of the top 100 annual sales.

2. Claude Monet.

 

Born in 1840 and died in 1926. His sales amount to 36 lots (being an Old Master is what he has, you sell much for much less), for a total of 356,987,936 dollars. The highest lot has been sold for $ 84,687,500, Nymphéas en fleur, from 1914 – 1917, on May 8 at Christie’s New York (Rockefeller auction). Ranked 6 of the top 100 annual sales.

3. Zao Wou-Ki.

 

And a Chinese crowns the third place on the list. This artist, born in 1921 and deceased in 2013, is a clear example of Chinese growth in the art market, has sold 501 works in 2018, for a total of 326,709,980 dollars, the highest being 65,204,489 dollars, Juin – October 1985 on September 30, at Sotheby’s Hong Kong. It ranks number 11 in the top 100 annual sales.

4. Jean – Michel Basquiat.

 

Born in 1960 and died in 1988, he has sold 123 works this year. His youth and the few works that he was able to carry out during it represent an attraction, which has led him to sell $ 254,144,702, being the top piece Flexible, of the year 1984. It was sold for $ 45,315,000 on May 17 at Phillips New York, occupying the 16th place in the top 100 annual sales.

5. Andy Warhol.

 

Born in 1928 and died in 1987, this American is known worldwide for his pop art. It has sold 1,551 pieces this year, of which a yield of 243,515,430 dollars has been obtained, with the top piece being Double Elvis [Ferus type] of 1963, for 37,000,000 dollars. It is ranked 19th in the top 100 annual sales.

6. David Hockney.

 

Born in 1937, this British artist has sold 506 works in 2018, for a total of 206,494,892 dollars. Its top sales was $ 90,132,000, specifically Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures), 1972. It was a big sale, ranked 4 of the top 100 annual, and was sold on November 15 at Christie’s New York, setting a record for Hockney as the most sought-after live artist.

7. Zhang Daqian.

 

Born in 1899 and died in 1983, we see again a Chinese artist in a high position on the list. It has sold 536 works for a total of 181,669,552 dollars, being the highest for 13,129,521 dollars, without entering the top 100.

8. Amadeo Modigliani.

 

Born in 1884 and died in 1920, he has sold 38 works for a total of $ 162,878,233. He has in his possession the top 1 of sales in 2018, with Nu couché (sur le côté gauche), 1917. It was sold for $ 157,159,000 on May 14 at Sotheby’s New York.

9. Henri Matisse.

 

Born in 1869 and died in 1954, he has sold 494 works for a total of $ 154,137,127. His work par excellence this year has been Odalisque couchée aux magnolias, 1923, sold on May 8 at Christie’s New York (Rockefeller auction). Ranked 7 of the top 100 annual sales.

10. Willem de Kooning.

 

Born in 1904 and died in 1997, de Kooning is a recurring name in these places. We see that it has sold 93 works for a total of 152,720,104 dollars, being the highest for 68,937,500 dollars Woman as Landscape, 1954 – 55, on November 13 at Christie’s New York. Ranked 9 of the top 100 annual sales.

Born in 1864 and died in 1957, he has sold 358 works for a total of $ 130,790,024. Its highest sale has taken place for 13,245,608 dollars, without entering the top 100.

Born in 1909 and deceased in 1992, he has sold 122 works this year for a total of $ 126,612,228. Study for Portrait, from 1977, is his most expensive work of 2018: $ 49,812,500, occupying the 15th position of the top 100. It was sold at Christie’s New York on May 17.

Chinese artist born in 1944 with 28 works sold in 2018. The total of sales is $ 124,304,239, while his highest work is ranked 55 of the top 100, Snowy Mountains, 2017. It was sold for $ 21,533,175 on October 3 in China Guardian Hong Kong.

16. Edward Hopper.

 

Born in 1882 and died in 1967, he has sold 16 works in 2018, of which $ 120,120,439 have been obtained. Of course, the highest has been the third place in the top 100: Chop Suey, 1929, for 91,875,000 dollars. It was sold on November 13 at Christie’s New York.
